Mouse Years

Mice fed a high-calorie, high-fat diet (sorta like what Americans eat) had as good a survival rate after 2 years as mice fed a standard diet, even when the mice on the high calorie diet got fat, as long as they also got an antioxidant named resveratrol. If this discovery holds true for humans, it is possible that everyone can have their cake and live to eat it too.

The scientists also found other benefits in the resveratrol group. The motor skills of the animals treated with resveratrol improved as they aged, and they were indistinguishable from the mice on a normal diet. Perhaps most notably, their livers remained healthy, unlike those of obese animals who didn't get resveratrol, the team reports online today in Nature. "The obese mice lived as long and were much more similar to the lean animals."
This is, of course, the ultimate American dream: eat more, gain weight and still be healthy. Who could ask for anything more?
