Up in the Clouds


Uh, I think we may have identified the problem.

Donald Rumsfeld, in an emotional farewell to Pentagon staff, made his case that the situation in Iraq is not as bad as it was painted by the press:

Every time there’s a bomb going off in Baghdad, you’d think the whole country’s aflame. But you fly over it, and that’s just simply not the case.
Yep. Getting your information concerning the situation on the ground from a few thousand feet up rather than, oh, say, from the military commanders or the people who we are supposed to be helping to attain democracy, may be the best metaphor for the roots of this mess.

And he remains in denial. He continues to whistle past the graveyard. He still insists that the United States could succeed in Iraq, "but only if we have the patience and only if we have the staying power."

Unfortunately still more young Americans will be entering that graveyard to assuage old men's egos.
