Show and Tell
Texas is famous for cows and yellow roses.... Oh, and crazed politics.
Governor Rick (the South will rise again) Perry doesn't think the President of the United States can be trusted to give a speech to the state's kids. About President Obama's plan to speak directly to school children across the nation over the web on the importance of education, Perry had this to say:
While President Obama talking directly to school children could be a memorable moment in their young lives, I am troubled that local school boards and superintendents were not involved in the process. State law gives parents the discretion over whether they think this is appropriate for their children. I hope schools will provide a suitable alternative for students not participating in this event. I also hope that this is not an indication of the federal government further encroaching on states' authority over education.
Texas schools are a bit different, as Eileen Smith notes:
School is a place to teach our children that abstinence is the only answer and evolution is a lie, not some kind of indoctrination chamber to expose impressionable young minds to propaganda-type video. Like a Web speech by the president on the "importance" of "education." Yes, Barack Obama, no longer content with just ridding this country of the old and feeble, is now going after the next generation. Because he can.
In Dallas and surrounding areas, parents have been unusually vocal in their opposition. "It doesn't matter if it's a Republican or Democrat," said Bill Hogsett, a parent of a kindergartner. "We have a problem with the government intruding on our lives." Oh, honey. If you have a problem with big bad government, why don't you take your kid out of the government-funded public school system and learn him at home?
Garyld Miles, a father of twin first-graders said, "It's dangerous grounds for a president to ask students to advocate his policies for reform for education. That's exactly what he's doing." Yes, I'm sure that when the administration was plotting this particular government takeover, the first thing they said was, how do we get six-year-olds on board with our education reform policies? Looks like we're going to need more ponies.

As the father of four children, I am absolutely appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama's socialist ideology. The idea that school children across our nation will be forced to watch the President justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other President, is not only infuriating, but goes against beliefs of the majority of Americans, while bypassing American parents through an invasive abuse of power.It seems that, in certain Republican circles, listening to someone entails agreeing with them first. This would go a long way toward explaining the massive disconnect from reality in the Republican party at the moment.
While I support educating our children to respect both the office of the American President and the value of community service, I do not support using our children as tools to spread liberal propaganda. The address scheduled for September 8, 2009, does not allow for healthy debate on the President's agenda, but rather obligates the youngest children in our public school system to agree with our President's initiatives or be ostracized by their teachers and classmates.
