Reading that made me think that Dembski is man who wears many hats.

Which reminded me irresistibly of this little exchange from Yes, Minister

James Hacker: Speaking with my parliamentary hat on, I don't think it would be a very good idea; on the other hand, with my Cabinet hat on, I think perhaps it would be a good idea. But there again, with my Party hat on, I can see there could be arguments on both sides.
Sir Humphrey Appleby: I see, and which hat are you talking through at the moment?
 

Well, it's clear that you can have your "as MP" hat on, your "as Cabinet" hat on, or "as Party" hat on ... the question is when you have your asshat on.

Oh wait a minute ... we have Wild Bill to define that for us ...
 

They don't pretend to be doing science--and now for something completely different--then use ID as apologetics at another time (with a whole lot of mixing the two, which we're simply wrong to notice) simply to get around the courts.

They are trying to pretend to their gullible flocks that "shucks, it's all just honest science" perhaps even more than they're trying to maintain plausible deniability for legal reasons. Even the duller religionists would be concerned if they didn't think that science couldn't all by itself show that there's a God (well, only the one/three, of course), so I rather suspect that a whole lot of the "plausible deniability" is aimed at the religious.

They might be trying mainly to allow the religious to fool themselves (is any court dumb enough to be fooled by now?), as it provides for a lot of relief to them to be able to "claim science." You really only have to read the positive reviews of Meyer's book to realize that at least a lot of them eagerly swallow such nonsense whole--and obviously without having any ability to judge the matter.

Giving religious morons (and many religious are not) a veneer for their religious prejudices is a lucrative business.
