Stupid Is As Stupid Does
Sometimes you just have to repeat yourself. Forrest Gump is just too applicable to so much of American "thought" today not to be referenced. Here's an example:
The very fact that you use the term "decency" is enough to make anyone who understands the word spit.

Rabbi Noson Leiter of Torah Jews for Decency is blaming Hurricane Sandy on gays and lesbians ...So ... you're stupid enough to think that there was a flood of the entire world "in the time of Noah." But, tell me, how many of the 109 people who died in the storm were homosexuals? Statistics suggest that most weren't but your God has always been a bad bow man, hasn't he?
Leiter asserted that the "the Great Flood in the time of Noah was triggered by the recognition of same-gender marriages," adding that there are similar "messages in this particular storm for us." "The Lord will not bring another flood to destroy the entire world but He could punish particular areas with a flood, and if we look at the same-gender marriage recognition movement that's occurring, that certainly is a message for us to learn," he said. "We have to learn that the Lord does watch what we do and if we don't shape up He will deliver divine justice." Leiter also suggested that God flooded Lower Manhattan because it is "one of the national centers of homosexuality."

If I were still religious and believed in the concept, I would consider that sort of response, from whatever source, as blasphemous. It implies that God is so petty, mean-spirited and vengeful that he would kill 109 innocent bystanders as a warning to the rest of us about the behavior of a small minority of us that does no harm to anyone. That is not the nature of the God I was brought up to believe in and to trivialize and demean His name and person in that way is a blasphemy.
At least it would be if I still believed n such a being and such a concept. Since I don't, I will content myself with assuming that the man, judged by his own words, is a familiar type of homophobic bigot who uses his religion to justify his prejudice.

I believe Saint Stephen Colbert addressed this very issue recently at Fordham University, when a student asked, “So many [religious] leaders spread hatred, especially of homosexuals. How can you maintain your joy?"
Colbert said, "If someone spreads hate, then they're not your religious leader."
I also like what the writer Anne Lamott once said, that if God hates all the same people you do, you can be pretty sure you've just created God in your own image...

I'm so stealing that!

Rabbi Leiter would do well to read his own Torah. From Genesis 6:1-2:
6 1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
It was those "sons of God," some sort of divine beings, who started the process that led to the Flood by cannoodling with human women.

If you ask me there was altogether too much canoodling in the Bible. I never understood how some Christians could look down their noses at sex when the OT is one "begat" after another. I suppose it filled in the time between all that conquering and annexing.
Not to mention their horror that gay marriage might lead to polygamy ... just like that practiced by Abraham, Jacob, David and Solomon ... all those "holy" people from the Bible.
